Good laboratory design is about far more than the appearance of a facility. It influences safety, functionality, flexibility, sustainability and the wellbeing of everyone who uses the laboratory.
AS 2982:2026, Laboratory design and construction, is a comprehensive revision of the 2010 edition. This presentation provides a practical, high-level overview of the principal changes and broader themes reflected in the revised Standard.
It explores why the Standard was revised, the major changes introduced in the 2026 edition, and contemporary approaches to early planning, User Requirements Specifications, risk-based design, accessibility, flexibility, sustainability, mobile laboratories and other specialist laboratory facilities.
The presentation highlights how the revised Standard responds to the evolving needs of laboratories and supports safer, more functional, adaptable and sustainable facilities.

Dr Angelica Vecchio-Sadus - HSE Professional

Dr Angelica Vecchio-Sadus is an experienced health, safety and environment professional with more than 30 years’ experience across risk management, compliance, leadership and stakeholder engagement. Her career began in science before progressing to senior HSE roles.
She has worked with domestic and international stakeholders in research and technology environments across energy, mining, manufacturing, biomedical, and infrastructure sectors. Angelica was the Drafting Leader for the revision of AS 2982:2026, Laboratory design and construction, and is the Independent Chair of Standards Australia Technical Committee CH-026, Laboratory Safety and Design. She is also Australia’s Head of Delegation to ISO committees covering laboratory design, laboratory equipment and laboratory furniture.
She is a Fellow and Chartered OHS Professional of the AIHS, a member of RACI, and holds postgraduate qualifications in science and occupational health and safety.
