On 19 February 2009, a formal notification was distributed to all SIA members outlining the Terms of Reference for the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and the SIA’s Media Release on the tragic Victorian Bushfires. It also extended an invitation for contributions from members with special expertise in this area.
On behalf of a dedicated team and with welcomed and valued contributions from members being received (all of whom are listed in our submission), I am very pleased to confirm that the SIA’s formal submission to this Royal Commission was submitted this afternoon ahead of the 4:00pm cut-off.
As I have said to many people since we started this process in February, this effort within the Institute and particularly by dedicated and professional members of the SIA’s National Technical Panel, plus those other members who have contributed as well, is a great example of the “SIA at its very best”.
The Royal Commission has confirmed receipt of our submission. With respect to "Living Safely Culture" we have emphasized that the paradigm around what needs to change is a complex issue. We have also indicated that the SIA would welcome the opportunity to discuss its submission with the Royal Commission and explore the need for a more detailed paper on this issue.
