ISO 45001 can help organisations to improve worker safety, reduce risks and create better, safer working conditions all over the world. In Australia, this ‘global game-changer’ replaced AS/NZS 4801:2001 as AS/NZS ISO 45001:2018 (published October 2018).

Health and Safety is crucial to the modern business landscape. A structured approach to managing health and safety means implementing a system and not a standard. Organisations that implement a standard tend to focus on compliance and not effectiveness. The true value of ISO 45001 comes from linking the business strategy and the health and safety management system, and not developing a standalone set of documents.

As Australia’s national science agency with a growing international footprint, the CSIRO implemented AS/NZS ISO 45001 to:

  • Further committed to safe, healthy and sustainable work
  • Promote leadership, accountability and worker engagement
  • Pursue innovation through adaptive risk management
  • Prevent work-related injury and ill health, and promote wellbeing
  • Demonstrate due diligence and continually improve performance.

The benefits so far have included:

  • Facilitating an improved way of operating to make health and safety personal, useful and effective
  • Aligning with other business processes and management systems
  • Implementing a strategic approach to activities, data, and compliance
  • Demonstrating industry best practice and enhancing business reputation
  • Strengthening the confidence of regulators and customers.

This presentation outlines how the CSIRO constructed the elements of the health and safety management system, engaged with workers and interested parties to develop the system, and promoted it.
