Good work design is fundamental to high-performing organisations. It is a practice that engages the workforces, ensures regulatory compliance among safety systems, and provides outcomes that improve the productivity, health, safety, and sustainability of the workforce. Too often, random projects are undertaken without the effort being strategically unified among business units or occurring within a sustainable and resilient program which would ensure the most efficacious outcomes. When design concepts, features, targets, and measures are expressed among multiple business units, the impact of good work design can be more fully realised.

The learning outcomes and take-aways include:

  • Introduction to a definition of good work design
  • Understand good work design in context to underpinning practices of human-system integration, human-centred design, human factors, & ergonomics, and underlying or complementary emerging theories in resilience engineering and human organisation performance.
  • Identify steps that can be undertaken to advance good work design projects
  • Learn about an occupational perspective of health as a model for continuous improvement
  • Learn about the different drivers and measures of a successful project versus a program within a capability model for good work design
  • Learn about case studies and a program review that demonstrate the outcomes that may be achieved through a design-orientation to work improvement in areas of physical design (tasks and equipment), cognitive design (environmental stimuli to support performance), and systems design (work communication strategies and competency or education and training models)
  • Explore examples of design concepts and objectives that could be adopted by business units that wish to unify their approach toward good work design
