Violence in New Zealand’s hospitals has recently gained mainstream media attention due to the ever-increasing occurrence of it, especially in our emergency departments. Auckland DHB has undertaken a raft of initiatives in order to understand, report and to respond to this increasing workplace risk. This webinar will touch on the current landscape, reporting initiatives, and a look at how a strategy is underway to link different systems in the hospital to ensure a strategic and effective approach to combat this increasing trend, thusly supporting and protecting the safety of not only hospital staff, but also other members of the public that utilize this service.

Auckland DHB was recently recognized at the New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards 2019, winning the Kensington Swan best initiative to address a work-related safety risk for their new electronic system that lets staff in the emergency department swiftly report violent incidents, generating good data so that the effectiveness of interventions can be measured.

Frances Russell is currently working in the role of Workplace Violence and Aggression Prevention Lead at Auckland DHB. She has a background leading projects in both DHB’s and NGOs, looking at workforce development and practical solutions to ensure staff safety and quality patient care. Prior to her work as a project lead, Frances has worked in community and inpatient environments as a Mental Health Clinician with both children and adults.
