WigglesWorth Memorial Lecture - hear Paul Salmon present his lecture: Systems thinking in occupational health and safety: ten lessons learned We will also be presenting our OHS Education awards.
This session was recorded on 17th June 2021
Systems thinking is a currently popular philosophy within safety science that is applied to understand and enhance occupational health and safety. In this lecture I will reflect on over twenty years of applied safety research and discuss ten critical lessons learned about occupational health and safety management. This will involve the use of case study examples covering areas such as accident and injury causation, risk and risk assessment, incident reporting and learning, accident analysis, work design, and the development of safety interventions. The practical implications of each lesson learned for occupational health and safety management will be discussed. To close the lecture, emerging challenges for occupational health and safety will be identified as well as the need for widespread application of systems thinking.

About the event
The Dr Eric Wigglesworth AM Memorial Lecture is presented in conjunction with the AIHS’s Annual Education Awards. Now in its eleventh year, the Dr Eric Wigglesworth AM Memorial Lecture is an annual event presented by the Australian Institute of Health & Safety. The event was established to recognise the pioneering contributions and engagement of Dr Wigglesworth in the field of occupational health and safety.

Paul Salmon
Paul M. Salmon is a professor in Human Factors and is the director of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Paul has almost 20 years’ experience of applied Human Factors research in areas such as road and rail safety, aviation, defence, sport and outdoor recreation, healthcare, workplace safety, and cybersecurity. His research has focused on understanding and optimizing human, team, organisational and system performance through the application of Human Factors theory and methods. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing and Service Industries journal, and has co-authored 21 books, over 230 peer reviewed journal articles, and numerous book chapters and conference contributions. Paul’s work has been recognized through various accolades, including the Chartered Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factor’s 2019 William Floyd award and 2008 Presidents Medal, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Australia’s 2017 Cumming memorial medal, and the International Ergonomics Association’s 2018 research impacting practice award
